THE FULFILMENT OF THE LONG AWAITED DREAM OF THE REGION. Designed for contextual relevance rather than iconic statement, the Mbombela Multi-purpose Stadium is being built expressly for World Cup 2010, but it is envisaged that the Stadium will come to its full right only afterwards when it assumes the role of the long awaited hub of sport and sport related activities in Mpumalanga. Although the World Cup 2010 is the catalyst that made the Mbombela Stadium a reality, the construction of a regional multi -sport stadium complex is the culmination of a fifteen year epic on the part of the Mpumalanga Province, the Mbombela Local Municipality, and the Nelspruit community, to establish a modern stadium of national relevance. Whereas most of the other World Cup 2010 host cities, with existing large stadia and local urban populations numbering in the millions, elected to build stadia that could compete with the rest of the world in terms of capacity and impressive structures, Mbombela and their team of stadium designers elected to focus on a Stadium that fits the regional character, and that will have local relevance in a post World Cup 2010 environment.
